Stella McCartney Designs Post-Mastectomy Bras to Make Women Feel Beautiful Breast Breast Cancer Celebrity Celebrity Fitness
In tribute to her mother, the British designer is making sure all breast cancer survivors feel supported—literally—after they undergo a double mastectomy.
We’ve long known that it doesn’t matter what size cup you are, your girls deserve to be supported by a beautiful bra. Stella McCartney, though, is making sure that truly extends to all women: The British designer has created a post-double mastectomy bra that is one of the most beautiful tributes to breast cancer survivors we’ve ever seen.

In 1988, the designer’s mother, Linda McCartney, died after a three-year battle with breast cancer, so this project is especially personal for the designer.
Dubbed the Louise Listening bra after Linda’s middle name, the blush-and-white lace lingerie is a delicate, feminine, yet still practical alternative to the usual matter-of-fact post-surgery garment. McCartney’s bra has a front zipper so it’s easy to slide on and off, as well as no underwire and deep sides that allow for proper compression and healing after a breast cancer survivor has had her tissue removed but before she potentially undergoes reconstruction.

“We want to deliver on all fronts by providing technical support and comfort while women heal, without sacrificing on style, fashion, femininity, and fit. We wanted to give all of that to the woman who is battling through this,” McCartney told Vogue.
She isn’t the first to try and overhaul the utilitarian post-surgery lingerie world. AnaOno Intimates—which was launched by Dana Donofree after she survived her own diagnosis at just 28 years old—and Nashville-based The Pink Bra both specialize in beautiful bras and sports bras for different stages of the recovery process.
However, the Louise Listening bra—like everything McCartney designs—offers a unique and particularly emotive touch to the category. "We wanted to bring something feminine and beautiful into a bra that is taboo," McCartney told the Telegraph. "There are so many different emotions attached to the tragic realities of having had a double mastectomy, many cultures are unaccepting and terrible things happen to women both physically and emotionally."
Needless to say, a garment so beautiful will certainly help break the taboo and allow women to feel beautiful and feminine again after surgery.
The Louise Listening bra isn’t available until October 1, but preorders are available onStellaMcCartney.com for about $131. All proceeds go to the Hello Beautiful Foundation’s effort to build a new breast cancer supper center in London.
